In November 2001 the Friends of the Library Committee was formed to research the possibility of establishing a public library. Surveys were mailed to residents of Kindred and the surrounding area, to determine community support, programming needs, and funding data. Overwhelming supporting was received and this dream of a library became a reality for the community in October 2003. The library received a $5,000 start-up grant from Cass County Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up program. Additional donations, memorials, and grants continue to be received to support operating expenses such as lease payments and utilities.
The building is located on Elm (main) street and is leased through the Kindred Area Rural Recovery Association. Currently, the library utilizes about one-half of the space. A small community meeting room and three businesses joins the library at this location.
It is the Library’s mission to promote literacy and to provide materials for enjoyment, education and research. Internet and copying services are provided as well as links to other libraries throughout North Dakota. Currently we have 430 patrons plus 7000 books and materials. The library is staffed entirely by volunteers.
A floor plan of the remodeling project is posted in the Library. Your support is encouraged through gifts, attendance at Library sponsored events, and by volunteering. Call 701-428-3456 for more information.
